How do i start studying Geology?
What are the universities available for Studying geology (Specially Petrology, Engineering geology and Hydrogeology )? I am a science graduate but i need to change my carrier path. Would i be able to do a Master in geology and start my carrier as a geologist because i am about 30 years old?
I guess use one of those career search engines listing schools with majors in geology…also you might be bale to work with geology by studying environmental science and then specializing in geology, to be sure I’d consult with an admissions rep from a university you are interested in going to.
Most universities have a department of natural sciences and will accept graduate students in a variety of disciplines. If you want to specialize in a certain ‘flavor’ of geology, look for a school that concentrates in the derivitave field.
For example, if you are interested in petrology, look for a mining school or a university located in or near oil fields (like Texas A&M). For engineering geology, try an engineering school…
I hope that this helps.
Go to your library and see if they have a copy of the college blue book. It has a volume that lists every subject offered by american colleges and the schools that offer that subject and at what level. Online there are several services. In the past I have found better, but this one isn’t bad:
As for starting a career in geology at 30… Yes, you can do that. I did. Keep in mind you’ll probably be doing field work with slightly younger people. But you’ll probably move upward quicker since you’ve got the add’l education. Personally, though, I prefer the field work to the ‘upward’ direction of management.
