What exactly does the class, geology, have to do with the major, civil engineering?
My major is civil engineering and I am taking a geology class this semester. In my geology class, people who are not majoring in geology were asked to do presentations on why taking a geology class is important for their major. I have a few reasons why geology is important for civil engineering majors, but I am looking for more information on the topic.
Well, I mean you can’t undergo a civil engineering project without first understanding the lay of the land very well. For example if an area is prone to earthquakes you are going to need to note this when you build a structure.
Since civil engineers mostly deal with roads and buildings, ground stability and soil quality and extremely important. Different types of ground require different kinds of asphault and the civil engineer is responsible for finding that out. Since they also deal with storm water drainage, knowing how a surface will cope with certain amounts of water is crucial. Houses falling off cliffs in CA is a perfect example of why civil engineers NEED geology more than most people realize.
