What is the relevance of learning more about geology in regards to:
-Volcanic Activity
-Ground Water
-Coastal Features
I am writing an essay on a tour of these types of sites and would like to know more information on the relevance of learning more about geology regarding these things. Thanks very much for your help in advice!
Volcanic activity is what generates a lot of rocks. It relieves stress from within the earth. Different minerals in the ground can affect ground water content. Some water may be termed “hard” or “soft” and sometimes poisonous. Coastal features probably have mostly to do with, which minerals are more resistant to erosion. Coastal erosion cna actually reveal a lot of information if you take the time to examine the remains.
Volcanic activity will show you how frequent you will get earth quakes, land slides, liquefaction, potential for mud floods (lahar) and flooding. Flooding could occur in areas where a volcano has snow or ice and melts from hot gas or lava. Knowing the Volcanic history can also tell you the soil type of the area.
Here is a site to reference.
Knowing about ground water can help in agriculture. It would beneficial to pull water from a well. It also plays a part in the land slides and liquefaction stated above. If the water table is high or the soil is saturated those natural hazards are at higher risk. I’m not to sure what else I can add on that.
Coastal features…. Cliffs, sandy soils, fossil records…. Beach cliffs are neat to look at. You can tell the history of the land by the formation of the layers on the cliff face. Sometimes you can find sea shells and other sea life in a certain layer but in other find non sea bearing creatures and plants. Some areas you can see if volcanic activity has occurred by looking for a darker layer such as basalt or granite.
I’m sure there are many things others can add but the main point for me is to observe soil types and from that you can tell a lot about an area.
