It sounds like it could have been a kangaroo rat. I would guess that it was probably the Ord’s Kangaroo Rat, which is the most common species of Kangaroo Rat and ranges all the way from where I live in Texas up into Canada.

For sites about identifying rodents, try looking through your local wildlife authority website and getting a list of wild rodents native to your area. Then you can look them up one by one.
Edit: Degus are not native to North America. If it is a degu, it is someone’s pet who escaped. But it could be a pika. Those are the North American version of the Degu.
